As of January 2010 approximately 33,000+ Rainbow Strings have been distributed around the world!

While our activities over the past years have introduced Hei: The Ancient Art of Hawaiian String Figures to the awareness of those living on the island of Kaua'i, it is our continued purpose to preserve the cultural Treasure of Hawaii and to increase the awareness of String Figures to all of the Hawaiian Islands, Polynesia and the World.

We introduced Hawaiian String Figures to the 1st, 3rd and 6th grade Hawaiian Studies classes of Kiko Johnston.

Niaulani Center at Volcano Art Center, Volcano, Hawaii
We presented in the Great Room, String Figures with an emphasis on those made on Big Island to a group aged 90 days to the age of Kupuna. Both Native Ohana and visiting families increased their facility with string figures. 45 individuals enjoyed the program.

AstroDay at Prince Kuhio Plaza, Hilo, Hawaii
Featuring over 50 exhibits, demonstrations and activity areas throughout Prince Kuhio Plaza, including the observatories on Mauna Kea, educators, students, Hawaiian culture groups and commercial vendors. An estimated 12,000 visitors to this event. We distributed over 500 Rainbow Strings when we ran out some two hours before the event's end. We demonstrated figures until even our demonstration strings were given away. Help in providing more strings is a definate need and donors are invited to contact us at stokes@lava.net/.

Hospice of Hilo Staff Development Day
Using String Figures we performed the Opening Meditation with demonstration of how to do the figures used. We also presented a paradigm for Healing With Strings and how to do the figures.

We found our new surroundings in need of being explored and spent months meeting people, places and things. Our work was surrounded by helping our organizations and friends to get established as well. Finally...

Huna Talk Story at The Cooper Center, Volcano, Hawaii
We presented a talk and demonstration entitled "The Healing Art of Hawaiian String Figures. A Video ot the talk was produced and shown on Public Broadcasting Stations in Hawaii and the internet. The DVD is available at $20.00 plus shipping.

November 5
The Volcano School of Arts & Sciences, A Plus Program. Presentation for students enrolled and present. We introduced Hei -String Games as the first guests of this progam at the school. Approximately 25 students and adults.

The Kau Ohana School in Waiohinu - A presentation of The Little Hawaiian Rainbow adapted from the book by Stacey Daum. The 19 K-8 students with their teachers, parents, grandmothers or friends applauded our program and waved and shouted Aloha as drove back up Maua Loa to our home in Volcano.

• Makahiki Game Day for 150 students at the Immersion schools of Niihau and Kapaa at Lydgate. Contact person: Lopaka Bukoski Health Education Outreach Worker Ho’ola Lahui Hawai’i. We shared with students and Kumu’s. There were 8 stations of Makahiki Games of which now Hei is included. We taught nine eyes, honu, one eye and some of the children knew the rake. We demonstrated Kauhale a Limaloa. We have reintroduced hei to the Makahiki Games on the island of Kaua’i. Perhaps others will follow our direction in years to come

Gave away more than 200 Hawaiian Rainbow Strings to residents and visitors. We promoted peace and harmony through the sharing of The Aloha String Figure & Bracelet of Rainbow Blessings booklet.

• Crystal Rowe from the special education class at Kapaa Middle School asked if we could come to her classroom to teach hei. Her students (who attended the Koke`e session) worked with the strings and would not put them down and the other students want to learn them too. She wants to invite some regular ed students too. There should be about 20 students at 10:00 AM

We were honored to be among a group of Hawaiian artisans thanks to Merci Labrador from Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center. We gave away over 300 rainbow strings because of their sponsorship. We met many wonderful people. Brother Noland was introduced to our work as were many kapunas who were at tables near us. At one point there were a group of monks from the Kauai Hindu temple telling us that they made string figures in India. Children and adults were fascinated by the strings. We had a group of 15 hotel gardeners all with strings in their hands and smiles on their faces

Year 2001:
March through May 2001:
• Hei Hui, Tuesdays, 10:30 AM , at Kauai Heritage Center Of Hawaiian Culture & The Arts arranged with Kehaulani Kekua, Curator. Our asking her for assistance in meeting Kupuna with knowledge of string figures drew her interest into the task of blending performance of the figures with ea (rhythm) and leo (voice) into a performance detailed below.
• Presentation of Hei: The Ancient Art of Hawaiian String Figures & Chants at Kauai Heritage Center Of Hawaiian Culture & The Arts with Lois and Earl Stokes and Kehaulani Kekua. A performance of string figure and art which included mobiles, string figures on rattan wall mats and art prints of string figures photographed in their story's environment. The enthusiasm of the audience was evidenced by the impromptu session on the floor after most had gone home. The group of nine women learned the String Figure Umeke ai o Hina, with movements taught by Lois Stokes and the leo (voice) taught by Kehau. The energy was intense and the still point at the end of the performance was deep. Truly a momentous event!
• String Figure Presentation in Princeville Hawai'i State Library on Kaua'i (part of the Summer Reading Program sponsored by Friends of the Princeville Library.) Storytelling involving String Figures in Hawaiian history and myth. Demonstration of string figures representing places, people, animals, gods, spirits and stars. A few slip tricks were also shown and the figure Nenue was taught. Each person received a rainbow colored nylon string, a recommended reading list and instructions for making Nenue to take home.

A presentation based on Lois Stokes' new booklet which provides an alternative to those seeking peaceful means of bringing the War on Terrorism to a speedy conclusion through blessings and The Aloha Spirit. We also placed our focus on learning how to make various string figures to broaden the knowledge base of figures already learned.

We were invited to present from 6:10 to 6:30 PM with emphasis on chant and a Christmas Star string figure learned by all. More than 100 people attended.

Year 2000:
February 2000:
• Community Forum presentation introducing Hei: The Ancient Art of Hawaiian String Figures through Lani Petranik of InSpirit Productions at Caffe Coco in Waipuli. The attendance at this event was over 40 persons, being the largest group then coming to one of these weekly forums made possible by the donation of space by Ginger, owner of Caffe Coco.
• Healing Circle at Aloha International's resource center, The Hawaiian Art Museum in Princeville to provide north shore residents who were unable to attend the Caffe Coco presentation of Hei: The Ancient Art of Hawaiian String Figures.
November 2000:
• Rediscovering the Ancient Wisdom of String Figures Workshop at Aloha International's Shaman Conference, with participants from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Denmark and the United States. The emphasis here was on the Shamanic use of String Figures as a tool for healing. Our half day presentation was amplified by the constant use of the string thoughout the week long conference.
November 2000 through February 2001:
• Hei Hui: A weekly meeting at Aloha International's resource center, The Hawaiian Art Museum in Princeville to allow enthusiasts to learn additional figures. These have been discontinued in favor of arranged sessions with individuals or groups to more nearly fit their time schedules.
• Hanalei School's Fourth Grade class of 15 students, their teacher and the school librarian. A part of the classes' study of Hawaiian Culture. We introduced Hei: The Ancient Art of Hawaiian String Figures to the class, gave them multicolored nylon cord and taught them to perform the string figure Honu (Turtle), made on all the Hawaiian Islands. The teacher planned to have the class teach the Third Grade Class. The success of this sharing was evidenced by reports from parents, friends and teachers of sightings of children performing the string figure Honu in Hanalei, Princeville, Kilauea, Anahola and Kapa'a.
