Earl and I held a Zentangle Basics class at the Volcano Art Center on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. We had exactly 11 students participate. The two tiles below are examples of the tangles taught during this introduction class. At exactly 11:11 we stopped this class for a moment of reflection and appreciation.

Below is a photo of the first tile completed. The class was impressed that even though they all heard the same instructions, each tile looked different. Zentangle is enjoyed by a wide range of ages and skill levels. One of the tiles was done by a 10 year old, another by a 15 year old and the rest … well, they were of ages not to be discussed.

This is the Artist's Field Book that was given to us from Rick and Maria at the Certified Zentangle Teacher Training #3 that Earl and I attended in May of 2010.

Taking a class from Certified Zentangle Teachers is a special opportunity that cannot be duplicated. We spent a week immersed in the energy of Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, the founders of the Zentangle Method. During that time we were gifted with over 102 tangles (now it is 106 official patterns). We learned much more than deconstructing a complex pattern into its elemental form. We learned the philosophy and experienced the spirit of this method. Embraced by the beauty of its founders we were embued with its essence. As CZT we have been given a gift that only we can share with our students.

Pinwheels for Peace

I am a Pinwheel ~ for Peace ~ that Whispers Aloha ~ in the wind

Laura's Challenge this week was to create a Pinwheel for Peace. I Used a pinwheel template as the background and then inspired by Zentangle®, I drew the tangle Paradox on both sides of the paper.

Toasted Tangles

I have the perfect snack to serve when you are tangling with friends.
I usually make more than one batch and keep it in bags for when the tangling mood comes upon me. I love serving it during my Zentangle® classes ~ It just disappears.

In a small bowl stir together:
3 tablespoons canola oil
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon cinnamon

In a large microwave-safe bowl mix
2 cups Corn Chex cereal
2 cups Rice Chex cereal
1 cup tiny pretzels

Top with the honey mixture and stir until well combined.
Microwave on high for 4-5 minutes, stirring well after every minute.
Cool before serving.

I am a whisperer ~ Every day I Whisper Aloha ~ I look at the beauty around me and share a whisper of gratitude. In Hawaii Aloha means much more than hello, goodby and love.

Aloha: Is the Spirit of Hawaii

Akahai: Kindness, expressed with tenderness.
Lokahi: Unity, expressed with harmony.
Olu‘olu: Agreeable, expressed with pleasantness.
Ha‘aha‘a: Humility, expressed with modesty.
Ahonui: Patience, expressed with perseverance.

I am an artist of the spirit ~ whose canvas is painted ~ with Whispers ~ of Aloha

I often combine my whispers with the creation of art. My work is a moving meditation, a spiritual and healing practice that I share to help make this world a better place.

People ask me... what is all this whispering about? Well, each morning while still half way between the dream worlds I get an inspiration. Something just comes into my consciousness. It could be triggered by something that someone said or did, or it could be the neighbors cat appearing at my door. I then become the cat or the rainforest or the dream and listen for a message. The message is then turned into a whisper. I do not plan my Zentangle® drawings either. They are always a surprise. I hope they inspire and delight you.

I spend a lot of time being aware of patterns. Patterns of man and place, nature and spirit, sight and sound. There are no limits to the patterns that connect us ~ as the sky against the earth.

Waves of movement in the patterns integrate the HU and NA
HU: Active - straight
NA: Still - curves
HUNA: "Secret" Hawaiian Esoteric Knowledge

Hidden patterns though not secret
Inner knowing outward sight
Rising, swelling, quieting, calming
Merging left and right

When I create art I am centered in the present moment. Mindful of my every movement. My Piko Piko breath launches me into radiant patterns of love and power. Appreciating the harmony of my work, I send the healing forth to create new patterns in those that are influenced by my work.

Patterns Concentrate

Circles enhance the effects
Spreads and releases tension
Energy moves out to the edge
Wholeness through intention

Rays gather as the lines direct
The energy moves inward
To a point increase the flow
As spokes direct it out

The Ancient Art of Hawaiian String Figures Archives

This weblog is about string figures from an esoteric point of view. You may have known the children's game called Cat's Cradle. In Hawai‘i string games were called hei and there were over 115 different recorded patterns. Our research has led us to believe that string figures were much more than just a child's game. Within this blog we will be exploring the Hawaiian healing arts, the philosophy of Huna, string figures, shamanism and more.

String Figures can be viewed from many different levels looking at: culture, language, myth, legends, art (visual, literary and performance), symbols, metaphors, anthropology, archeology, ethnography, cosmology, astronomy, science, physics, architecture, mathematics, music, philosophy, religion, psychology, healing, mysticism, shamanism, teaching, geomancy and the energy of color, number, sound, shape, patterns and more… We invite you to submit articles which may be considered pieces to the puzzle which answers the question, What if string figures were more than just a child’s game?
