Halau Hei

Ka HeiHei O Na Keiki

Early this year we were asked if we could teach a group of Home Schoolers the String Figure Wailua as they were studying The Wailua Area. We considered the dificulty of the figure and decided that if they wanted to try we would certainly love to have the opportunity to work with them. 2 sessions of about an hour and a half each left no doubt of their interest and their ability to learn this complex figure. What a delightful time working with them!

Soon after we were asked if we might teach this group on a bi-weekly basis and we agreed to work out a program and schedule to try this out over the next three months. Here was the birth of our Halau Hei. As we progressed from session to session it became apparent that na keiki (the children) were truly interested and capable of doing the work involved. During the quarter the group grew and drop-ins became frequent. As the quarter drew to a close we were asked to continue on a weekly basis to which we agreed and the pace quickened. The Ho‘ike at the end of the quarter found the haumana (students) capable of understanding, teaching and performing 30 Hei patterns.
